This project consists of converting an old industrial building into a unique clothing boutique and cafe. The site is part of a group of historic factories that are being re-developed alongside residential and commercial properties near Taihu Lake in Wuxi. Built in 1948, this brick and timber structure served to manufacture machine tools, and had originally stood as two independent buildings that were separated by an open yard, which was subsequently enclosed to provide additional space. Over the years, the building has been in various states of disrepair and underwent a number of ad-hoc changes.
Through a careful process of clearing, realigning and proposed insertions, our design attempts to create a sense of place, restore spatial clarity, and breathe new life into the building. The three separate spaces with their independent structures are brought together as one. The introduction of a new skylight floods the innermost space with natural light, creating a focal point and revealing the beauty of the original roof structures. The retail display is then organized around this central area, radiating outwards and encouraging users to freely browse through the combined buildings.
